There are several important changes taking place in the sphere of gardening with the emergence of new processes and gardening techniques that make things easier for today’s common man. However, it is interesting to take note of the fact that most of the institutions that were attached to gardening have remained unchanged. Despite the ever increasing urbanization process and the industries springing up everywhere, gardening has only managed to gain more importance and relevance in people’s lives.

People associate gardening with a variety of things. They may look at it as an occupation or as a hobby. But undeniably, gardening plays an important role in everyone’s life, directly or indirectly. There is definitely some amount of satisfaction in growing what you eat. Nowadays, it is essential for every household to have a herb garden or at least a basic vegetable garden, since it is naturally a healthier alternative.
Gardens can be found everywhere. Not just as a patch of green in your back yard. Greenhouse produce that is grown under controlled conditions and long, extensive patches of self-grown garden produce, all are considered branches or forms of gardening. Gardening is casually introduced to one’s daily sphere of activity, but it may develop to become a profession, an obsession or an art-form.

There are brand new forms of gardening that are emerging and the way people look at the idea of gardening too, is undergoing change. Concepts like community gardening, guerrilla gardening and organic produce gardening have emerged. Despite all these changes, however, the essence of gardening has remained unchanged. Commercially, the increasingly impersonal relationships and lack of time, has not affected the passion and the love that people have for gardening. There might be a simple explanation for this unwavering love for the garden and gardening. Although people might be obsessed with the idea of industrialism and progress, deep-down, there is an inherent love for nature and rural, the primal satisfaction of gardening that people get that cannot be suppressed. Another reason for gardening would be perhaps guilt. Humans, as a race have managed to destroy much of the natural world with deforestation and urbanization and industrialization. Perhaps, their inherent instincts compel them to preserve nature in some form or the other in their gardens.

Gardening requires precision and patience and time. Things which people seldom have the luxury to spare in today’s world. Yet there is no denying the fact that gardening has almost become a cultural norm. Gardening, which may also be referred to as urban agriculture, has its social relevance in all parts of the world. It promotes community co-operation, it has its psychological benefits, and of course it doesn’t hurt that it is, after all, a process of planting trees and thus, beneficial to the environment.

Newer and more modern methods of gardening have been developed that are drought-resistant, grow naturally and in climates that was previously thought to be unsuitable. These changing gardening patterns have emerged to provide the gardener with maximum convenience and to enhance the general quality of the gardens.
